Symptoms of Gum Disease in Edison
February 24, 2016
Gum disease is a common occurrence in people of all ages, however, it’s typically seen in adults over the age of 30. Gum disease is a serious condition that requires treatment or the progression of the disease can eventually lead to tooth, gum, and bone loss. However, the early stages of gum disease may not produce noticeable symptoms, allowing the condition to progress. Luckily, if caught early, the beginning stages of gum disease can be stopped and even reversed. As a professional dentist, we offer treatment for gum disease in Edison to help you stop the damage before it progresses.
What causes gum disease?
Gum disease is caused by the growth of bacteria in the mouth. There is always a certain amount of bacteria in the mouth, however, when the teeth are not brushed, flossed, or cleaned regularly, the amount of bacteria begins to accumulate and forms plaque. This accumulation leads to periodontal disease (gum disease), which occurs when there begins to be a destruction of the gum tissue surrounding your teeth.
There are a couple of different stages of gum disease depending on the progression of the damage that has occurred. The first stage of gum disease is gingivitis, which causes very mild symptoms and generally goes unnoticed for some time. Thankfully, gingivitis is completely treatable and can be stopped in its tracks. However, when left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which is a serious condition that can cause extreme consequences on oral health and your overall health.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
The beginning stages of gum disease, gingivitis, usually involves swelling and tenderness of the gums. The gums may become red and even bleed while brushing and eating. The bacteria growth in the mouth can cause bad breath and a poor taste in the mouth. Overtime, if gingivitis isn’t treated, the gums can begin to recede and form pockets. These pockets trap additional bacteria, leading to an increased rate of damage as gingivitis transforms to periodontitis.
When periodontitis occurs, these pockets have developed to a larger size, which now causes the pain, bleeding, and inflammation to intensify. In addition, the teeth can now begin to shift and even become loose. Overtime, the teeth may actually begin to fall out. When periodontitis is left untreated, there can be serious damage to the teeth, gums, and surrounding structures. Not to mention, gum disease is directly linked to many additional health complications, such as heart disease.
If you suspect you have gum disease, it’s important to seek treatment immediately. The sooner treatment for gum disease begins, the more likely the damage that has occurred can be stopped and in some cases reversed.
