4 Ways to Easily Remove Your Clear Aligners
February 16, 2022
If you recently started wearing Invisalign, you have probably noticed that it takes some getting used to. From cleaning your aligners to remembering to brush and floss after every meal, there can be a bit of a learning curve. Some patients also find it difficult to remove their trays. People who have Invisalign attachments may also find it harder to take their trays off. Rather than tugging on your aligners and risking breaking them, read on to learn about five methods that will make removing clear aligners easier.
Method #1: Use Your Fingers
Generally, you should be able to easily pop your aligners out using your fingers. This is the most practical option since it doesn’t require any additional tools. Start by releasing your aligners from your back molars on both sides of your mouth by hooking your fingernails under the edges of the trays and gently pulling them down. Release the aligners once you get toward the front of your mouth. At this point, they should easily lift off your teeth.
Method #2: Using Paper Towels
Paper towels allow you to get a better grip on your clear aligners, which can make it easier to remove them. With a paper towel in each hand, place them over your back molars and firmly grasp your aligner. Pull it down until it releases from your molars, then gradually move to the front of your mouth. Once your aligners have completely released from your teeth, they can be popped right off.
Method #3: Use Surgical Gloves
Much like paper towels, surgical gloves can increase one’s grip. Since they’re much easier to maneuver, they may actually be the better option for removing clear aligners. Thicker gloves are more difficult to use, so double-check that you have the right kind. You will also want to make sure they’re clean before using them to avoid accidentally introducing harmful bacteria into your mouth.
Method #4: Use an Aligner Removal Tool
Aligner removal tools are specially designed to help people who have trouble taking their trays off or who can’t clean their hands before doing so. These instruments are double-sided and have a hook on one end that can latch onto the aligner. The opposite side of the tool features a flat surface that rests against the edge of the aligner and dislodges the tray with a pushing motion.
Removing clear aligners isn’t always easy, but one of these four methods is sure to help. If you are still having issues, speak with your dentist so they can help you learn the best way to take out your trays so your treatment goes smoothly!
